Abstract

Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is primarily caused by benign insulinomas of the pancreas and much less frequently by the malignant counterpart. Other causes of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia include insulin factitial hypoglycemia (detected by suppressed C-peptide levels), sulfonylurea factitial hypoglycemia (detected only by appropriate and timed drug testing), and autoimmune hypoglycemia characterized by extremely high insulin and C-peptide levels with associated high antibody titers to human insulin.
