Abstract

A number of structural elements can be identified in fullerene cages that cause violations of the isolated pentagon rule (IPR), which requires that each of the twelve pentagons in a fullerene are surrounded by five hexagons. Endohedral fullerenes need not obey this rule and several structural elements have been identified that cause violations of the IPR. For example, one isomer of Gd3N@C84 has a site in the cage fabric where two pentagons share a common edge. What other structural elements of this sort have been identified? We will consider these and speculate upon what new elements might be expected to occur. Figure 1
