Abstract

This chapter focuses on the experience of a project involving more than 40 schools in South East London working with a team of six consultants. Once ownership of the Standard as a worthwhile goal has been established, data gathering by the consultant and/or by internal personnel can begin. All schools in England and Wales have had in the last few years to accept an increased level of formal accountability through external inspection and a national curriculum. Standard's statements help define processes which are necessary for learning to take place among adults in the whole school community. Diagnosis helps to structure a clear 'management curriculum' for schools in which there is often little common understanding across the staff of what function managers/leaders are actually there to perform. Consultants who choose to work on an organisational change programme like 'Investors in People' can assist schools by being expert in the research literature, techniques and case studies of school development.
