Abstract

Latin America has a long history of mining. Aboriginal peoples were using iron, copper, gold, silver, and coal long before the arrival of Europeans in the 15th century. Despite this tradition, Latin America has a relatively short history of modern mining. Only in recent years has the Latin American mining industry proclaimed its intention of being a major world player.
