Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of princely investiture in pre-Mongolian Russia. An analysis of the available sources leads to the conclusion that initially this investiture existed in the form of an inherently pagan ritual of proclaiming a prince in the princely court; this tradition has parallels in the circle of Balto-Slavic traditions. From the end of the XI century, the gradual process of changing the archaic practice of proclaiming a prince by a procedure of placing on the table in the cathedral church of the main city begins. For Kiev, the church rite of placing on the table is clearly traced from the middle of the XII century and finally becomes a tradition towards the end of the century.
