Abstract

Field trials of acaricides for control of European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), on Red Delicious apples were conducted during 1961 and 1962. The materials were applied early in the season as propnylactic sprays and as remedial treatments when high mite populations were present. Tetradifon gave control as a prophylactic spray even though the material was ineffective when applied to a mite population at or above the economic level. Eradex®, 2,3-quinoxalinedithiol cyclic trithiocarbonate, gave good control, but caused yellow spots on the fruit. Morestan®, 6-methyl-2,3-quinosalinedithiol cyclic carbonate, was effective as either a preventive or remedial treatment OW-g®, 2-[2-( p -tertbutyphenox)-1-methylethoxy]-1-methl- Ethyl 2-chlorethyl sulfite, gave poor control as a wettable powder In 1961, but was very effective as an emulsion concentrate in 1962. Binapacry, although giving initial knockdown of mites Did not provide residual control. Pentac® decachloro-1,1’-bi-2,4- cyclopentadienyl; and Animent V-10®2,4,4’,5-tetrachlorodiphenyl sulphide, did not give adequate control of the mites. Of the compounds tested, Morestan and OW-9 showed the most Promise for European red mite control in apple orchards.
