Abstract
Latent heat storage system using phase change materials (PCM) is an efficient way to store thermal energy among all the distinct kinds of thermal energy (Sharma A, Tyagi VV, Chen CR, Buddhi D, Review on thermal energy storage with phase change materials and applications. Renew Sustain Energy Rev 13(2): 318–345, 2009). It has the advantage of high energy storage density and isothermal storage process. Due to the low thermal conductivity of available PCM, the practical use of latent heat storage is limited in solar applications. The main objective of present investigation is to improve the heat transfer of shell- and tube-type latent heat storage unit (LHSU) using spiral fins. Total melting time is reduced by 63.37% and 80.30% for horizontal and vertical LHSU, respectively, with spiral fins.
