Abstract

Non-conventional Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is popularly employed technique for the manufacturing of miniaturized items with high degree of accuracy and precision. In this process, the dielectric fluid plays a major part in influencing the machining parameters. Conventionally, hydrocarbon products were used as dielectric fluid during EDM operation. The most common of them is kerosene. Health of the operator and environment need to be given importance when hydrocarbon based dielectric fluids are used. Since, they produce harmful emission, vapors and aerosols during the process. Further, non-biodegradable waste products are also produced. To conquer these issues, alternate dielectric fluid is needed. In this work, feasibility of using jatropha curcas oil based biodiesel (JCOB) as sustainable dielectric fluid during EDM operation has been thoroughly investigated. Dielectric fluid and its important function have been discussed in detailed. It is suggested that JCOB can be viably employed as dielectric fluid.
