Abstract
The life stages of Tetylenchus joctus are described and measurements related to the identification of these stages are presented. Eggs are laid generally before undergoing cleavage, and hatch in 5 to 8 days in distilled water at 23 to 25° C. The life cycle from adult to adult takes approximately 5 weeks and is directly affected by temperature. Fluctuations in field environment over a 1-year period did not significantly affect the morphology of T. jortus. T. joctus was maintained for up to 3 months on garden balsam callus, root tips and seedlings grown on artificial media in the laboratory, but did not survive long after being placed in contact with tissues of several other plants. Populations of T. joctus on garden balsam in the greenhouse caused no pathological symptoms nor statistically significant differences in dry root weights between inoculated and control plants.
