Abstract

In this context, spectroscopic properties, quantum yield and temperature dependent luminescence of Cr3+ doped MgGa2O4 have been investigated. The calculated value of Racah parameter and crystal field strength suggests that Cr3+ experiences a strong crystal field in MgGa2O4 host. Quantum yield was calculated to be 0.05. The temperature dependent photoluminescence spectra showed decrease of peak intensity and increase of FWHM with increasing temperature and the decay curves showed decrease of lifetimes with increase of temperature because of the increasing population of the 4T2 state than 2E state at higher temperature. Temperature sensitivity was calculated using lifetime scheme and the maximum sensitivity was obtained as 0.0177 K−1 at 450 K at excitation wavelength 436 nm. It has been shown that temperature sensitivity measurement can be performed under UV, blue and orange excitation.
