Abstract

The knowledge of pressure distribution within a pebble bed is of importance with reference to the control rod system of the THTR-Project (Thorium High Temperature Reactor). As in granular materials the pressure distribution differs essentially from that in a liquid. A new method of pressure measurement was used. Rods of small diameter (“measuring rods”) were inserted slowly into the pebble bed and the forces (“displacement forces”) necessary to move a single sphere against the resistance of the bed were measured. In this manner vertical and horizontal displacement forces were obtained which show the anisotropy of pressure distribution. The connection between displacement forces and pressure is discussed.
