Abstract

AbstractThe redistribution reaction between tetra‐n‐butylgermanium and germanium tetrachloride has been investigated. Under suitable conditions it is possible to prepare tributylgermanium chloride and dibutylgermanium dichloride by this reaction in yields of over 80%. The presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride is required. The analogous preparation of butylgermanium trichloride in good yield has not been realized. The relative reactivity of the compounds BunGeCl4‐n (n = 0, 1 or 2) with respect to alkylation by tetrabutylgermanium in the precence of aluminium trichloride was found to be Bu2GeCl2> BuGeCl3>> GeCl4.The new compound butylgermanium trichloride is characterized.
