Abstract

The synthesis of acetic anhydride by carbonylation of methyl acetate was studied at temperatures between 165 and 220 °C and pressures of carbon monoxide to 60 bar. Many compounds of Group VIII transition metals were surveyed for their catalytic properties. In order to find optimum cocatalysts, various metals (Cr, Mo, W, Co), phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing bases, as well as different iodide promoters and solvents were examined.
