Abstract

The low-lying states in 70Ge and 72Ge have been excited by scattering of 12 MeV deuterons. The angular distributions of the deuterons elastically and inelastically scattered by states up to 2.6 MeV were measured by means of a d E/d x solid-state detector system. The 1.71 MeV and 2.16 MeV levels in 70Ge have been assigned as 2 +′ and 4 + on the basis of the angular distributions which were similar to those of the corresponding levels in 72Ge. In both isotopes, a strongly excited level about 2.5 MeV was assigned as 3 − on the basis of systematics. A DWBA analysis was performed for the elastic scattering and for the inelastic scattering to the 2 + and 3 − levels. Double Coulomb excitation by means of 30–37.5 MeV 16O ions was used to excite the 0 +′ level in both isotopes. The reduced transition probabilities B(E2, 2 + → 0 +′) were found to be < 40 fm 4 e 2 and 51±5 fm 4 e 2 for 70Ge and 72Ge, respectively.
