Abstract

Nonlinear coherent structures on a cross-field plane are observed in the linear Large Volume Plasma Device (LVPD). The structures are determined from conditional averaging of floating potential signals taken by an array of Langmuir probes that is moved to different radial locations from shot-to-shot. The reference probes are two single Langmuir probes that measure both ion saturation current and floating potential at a fixed location in the matrix of 31×9 observation locations. Our measurements show that ion saturation current and floating potential structures are anti-correlated, the structure sizes are elongated in the radial direction with cross field size of a few cm and life time exceeding 3 times the auto-correlation time.
