Abstract

Abstract Tobacco in Malawi often suffers from outbreaks of anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum tabacum (Boning); particularly at the seedling stage. In order to identify suitable sources of resistance for use in a breeding programme three varieties of Nicotiana tabacum and eight other Nicotiana species were tested in the greenhouse trials, three varieties of N. tabacum and five other Nicotiana species were tested in seedbed trials. The most promising sources appeared to be N. sanderae or N. debneyi, and possibly N. nudicaulis or N. forgetiana.
