Abstract

Morphological and chemical variability of seven populations of sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum (L.) Scop.) identified in different locations of the forested area of Belgium were investigated in natural sites. The morphological observations and plant material collecting were carried out on each site just before blooming. The content of coumarin, flavonoids and total phenol of leafy shoots was determined. Results showed that most of the morphological parameters (shoot growth, number of leaves in a whorl, leaf area and branching habit) vary significantly depending on the site except for the number of whorl on a shoot which appears to be rather constant. Significant differences between populations as to the phytochemical content were also observed.
