Abstract

The piece of investigation is carried out to study the effect of copper slag (CS) on the mechanical properties and durability aspects of Normal Strength Concrete (NSC), High Strength Concrete (HSC) and Ultra-High Strength Concrete (UHSC) mixes. CS, which is the by-product discharged from copper manufacturing industry is used for replacing the fine aggregates in different proportion. It is observed that compressive strength has been significantly improved up to 60% of the replacement of Fine Aggregate (FA) by CS for all the mixes. Further, it is noted that even with 100% replacement of FA by CS, the compressive strength is higher than the control mix. In durability studies, Rapid Chloride Penetration Test, Water Sorptivity Test and Water Absorption Test showed significant resistance to chloride penetration, Sorptivity and water absorption. The reason for significant improvement in compressive strength and durability could be attributed to pozzolanic activity and filler effect over the cementitious matrix effectively.
