Abstract

ABSTRACT Many litres of used cooking oils from the food preparation were just throw away as a Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) and it will pollute the environment. The best way of utilising it by converting WCO to biodiesel. In this research, the performance and emission characteristics of four-stroke diesel engine have been experimentally investigated for the waste cooking oil emulsion and it is compared with conventional diesel. In addition effect of 50 ppm of aluminium oxide nanoparticle to the waste cooking oil, the emulsion is also studied. Performance tests were carried out in a constant speed single cylinder diesel engine fuelled with diesel, waste cooking oil emulsion and waste cooking oil nanoemulsions. The test results show that significant improvement in brake thermal efficiency and reduced specific fuel consumption and oxides of nitrogen for waste cooking oil nanoemulsion as compared to the waste cooking oil emulsion.
