Abstract

Objective Investigate the acute toxicity and chief effects of JiangXiaZhiKeTang to provide its further development with experimental data. Methods Asminist the maximal dose of JiangXiaZhiKeTang to determine the acute toxicity of JiangXiaZhiKeTang on mice. Observe the antitussive effect of JiangXiaZhiKeTang on mice cough induced by ammonia and sulfur dioxide. Determine the expectorant effect of JiangXiaZhiKeTang by measuring the phenol red excreted in mice trachea or measuring the amount of phlegm siphoned by capillary. Build a chronic bronchitis animal model by sulfur dioxide, intrapulmonary superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase ( GSH-Px ), malondialdehyde ( MDA ) and myeloperoxidase( MPO ) in blood serum as indexes to evaluate JiangXiaZhiKeTang, as well as avoirdupois, the change in immune organs frame and tussive frequency. Results The primary maximal dose of JiangXiaZhiKeTang is 436 grams crude drug per kilogram with mouse, 968 times as many as adult daily dose. JiangXiaZhiKeTang can relieve a cough induced by ammonia and sulfur dioxide, promote the excrete of phenol red and phlegm. Compared to chronic bronchitis animal model group, superoxide dismutase ( SOD ), glu- tathione peroxidase(GSH-Px )are raised, prominently thymus index and spleen index, but cough frequency, malondialdehyde (MDA ) content , myeloperoxidase ( MPO ) content of treatment group are all reduced. Conclusions With exact antitussive and apophlegmatic effect, JiangXiaZhiKeTang is safe and effective. JiangXiaZhi KeTang can improve the unbalance between oxidation and anti-oxidation within chronic bronchitis and immunologic function by way of reinforce antioxidase activity. Key words: JiangXiaZhiKeTang, acute toxicity, relieve a cough , eliminating phlegm , anti- oxidation
