Abstract

The microstructure of the as-cast AA7136 aluminum alloy and its evolution during homogenization were investigated by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The results indicate that the eutectic structures in as-cast 7136 alloy were identified as a(Al) + Mg(Zn,Cu,Al)2, and some Al2Cu phases formed in the eutectic structures during solidification. The lamellar eutectic structures in the as-cast 7136 alloy dissolved into the matrix or evolved isolated particles during homogenization at 470°C for 24 h. The eutectic phases were eliminated more sufficiently with a two-step homogenization treatment at 440°C for 12 h plus at 470°C for 36 h. During homogenization, a transformation from Mg(Zn,Cu,Al)2 to Al2CuMg phase occurred in the as-cast 7136 alloy, meanwhile the Al3Zr dispersoids precipitation also occurred.
