Abstract

The membrane structures have wide application in contemporary space borne assemblies. The multi-layered reflector is used for the transmission of different radio frequency waves from satellite to the ground station. The membranes of such reflectors are kept in pre-stressed to achieve the required surface accuracy and reducing in RMS error in the surface profile. The rectangular membrane reflector is supported by inflatable torus. The tension forces and inflation pressure is the crucial factor for the design of supporting inflatable torus. The present study investigates numerically and experimentally effect of tension forces on the torus for minimum torus deflection along with the inflation pressure. The comparative study for the torus inflation pressure is made for the multi-layered membrane reflector.
