Abstract

The classification of wind effects on a cable-stayed bridge is presented. Formulae for determining critical velocities of various aerodynamic instabilities are given. Special attention is paid to possible aerodynamic instabilities of bundled cable-stays. Values of critical velocities of torsional divergence, torsional futter and galloping of the cable-stayed bridge over Jordan are computed. The maximum distance of spacers between single ropes of a cable-stay is determined. A sectional model was designed for testing in a wind tunnel of diameter 1.8m; the model was investigated by means of a drag balance and the aerodynamic coefficients C L , C D and C M were determined.
