Abstract

The structure of the products of reaction between urea and cinnamaldehyde in acid media was studied by HET2DJ 13C NMR, 1H NMR and GPC. Two main reactions take place: the addition of urea to the carbonyl group and to the double bond. Many different oligomers wtih free carbonyl groups, double bonds, ▪ groups, -NH 2 and -NH- groups are formed. Side products such as urons, ethers and cyclic compounds can also be formed. The course of the reaction depends on reaction conditions and catalyst system. The products with average molecular weight between 700–800 are highly viscous red resins, soluble in polar solvents. These oligomers react further to form insoluble high molecular products.
