Investigation of unplanned extubation and reset of gastric tube in neonatal intensive care unit

Abstract

Objective To investigate the unplanned extubation and reset of gastric tube in neonatal intensive care unit （ NICU） .Methods A registration about unplanned extubation and reset was designed , and then unplanned extubation rate and reset rate were analyzed from 2011 to 2012 .Results A total of 269 cases with indwelling gastric tube were investigated ,and 27 cases with unplanned extubation occurred （10.03%）, of which 19 cases were reset （70.37%）.Thirteen cases with their own tube drawing （48.15%）, eleven cases with tape fixed loose （40.74%）, three cases with blockage （11.11%）, were founded.Conclusions NICU nurses should further strengthen the gastric tube management , in order to reduce the rate of unplanned extubation and gastric tube reset .
