Abstract
A brief survey is made of the papers devoted to the thermal blooming effect of laser beams in a gas in the presence of relative beam and medium motion. A classification is presented of the gasdynamic regimes of the thermal blooming effect and their qualitative distinction is displayed by using linearized equations. Fundamental attention is paid to regimes in which the gas velocity component transverse to the beam is a of the order of magnitude or greater than the sound speed.
