Abstract

The anomalous chemisorption properties and modified catalytic performance exhibited by many metal/oxide combinations following a high temperature reduction has been called the strong metal support interaction (SMSI) state. Whilst the effect of this state on catalyst properties has long been recognised the mechanism of SMSI has remained controversial. The proposal that the SMSI effect in Ru/Titania is due to a migration of the partially reduced oxide over the metal surface is strongly supported by the 1H NMR experiments presented here.
