Abstract

The presence of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF 6 ) as a gas insulation in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is essential because of the reliability of SF 6 gas in sustaining the electrical power system while transmitting power from the power plant through a substation. Utilization of SF 6 gas as a gas insulation medium in high equipment especially in Gas Insulated Switchgear is contrary to the policy issued at Kyoto Convention which is famous for the Kyoto Protocol. Under the Kyoto Protocol, gas usage requires immediate limitation and reduced use as it causes environmental damage. Effects of use arising from the SF 6 gas are high acid rain from the S (Sulphur) element released in the air and the depletion of the ozone layer due to the release of F (Fluor) in the air causes the binding of oxygen in the air so that ozone formation in the atmosphere is inhibited. An investigation of alternative gas alternative to SF 6 Gas is CF 3 CHC1 2 gas mixed with nitrogen gas. The purpose of mixing the gas to reduce the CF 3 CHC1 2 gas concentration in the air. Our research shows a mixture of CF 3 CHC1 2 + N2 with a ratio of 90%, 80% and 70% is valued of reliability against breakdown voltage with a value of 167.8-215 kV. This mixed gas capability has a strong electrical value of 1,075 times that of the SF 6 gas capability which has an insulating capability of 90 kV tensions. For a better breakdown voltage capability of SF 6 gas and the ability to extinguish the flame, CF 3 CHC1 2 + N2 gas suitable is recommended for use as an alternative gas application for SF 6 gas substitutes on high voltage equipment as reliable gas insulation
