Abstract

The interaction of the mineral niccolite with oxygen was studied by using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG). The course of the oxidation was critically dependent on niccolite particle size and on oxygen partial pressure. It appeared to be governed by the formation and disruption of protective product layers on the surface of the particles. The disruption of the product layers was due to their reaction with volatilized arsenic from the thermal dissociation of nickel arsenides. The thermal dissociation behaviour of niccolite was also examined by thermal analysis. It was found to be gradual and could be predicted from the Ni-As phase diagram.
