Abstract
1. The hydrolysis of phthalyl and terephthalyl chlorides was investigated in dioxane in the presence of additions of HC1, KOH, and carboxylic acids. 2. Hydrochloric acid does not influence the rate of hydrolysis of acid chlorides, while additions of terephthalic acid accelerate the hydrolysis of terephthalyl chloride. 3. The rate of hydrolysis of acid chlorides drops at low concentrations of the alkali added to the reaction medium, but then begins to rise sharply.
