Abstract

The growth of gadolinium molybdate crystals is described using two techniques: automated Czochralski growth and Stepanov growth. With the Stepanov technique, shaped crystals were grown in the [100] direction without rotation and in the [001] direction with rotation. In the first case, the meniscus was anchored to the die edges, hence the crystal cross-section was determined by the die. In the second case, the meniscus moved freely on the working surface of the die, and the crystal cross-section depended on the rotation rate. The crystals grown by the two techniques were found to be comparable in quality.
