Abstract

This paper presents a study of investigation into cutting tool rake angle effect on feed force to have secondary important during machining. For this purpose, a dynamometer was designed and manufactured for experimental determination of the cutting forces and mounted to a CNC turning centre. With the help of two beam type load cells suitably located on the dynamometer, it became possible to sense the cutting tool deflections due to the cutting forces. AISI 1040 was used as the workpiece material. Cutting forces (Fc and Ff) were measured with eight different rake angles changing from negative to positive values at five different cutting speeds. For all the tests, dept of cut and feed rate were kept constant. In addition, theoretically calculated feed force results were compared with the experimentally obtained ones. The lowest feed force (Ff) was observed when the rake angle was zero degree. Theoretically calculated and experimentally obtained Ff ratio was found to be mean 0.69.
