Abstract

Objective To investigate the intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' cognition for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and nursing knowledge so as to provide guidance for clinical work better. Methods One hundred nurses who were trained for nursing and worked in the ICU were randomly chosen from July 2010 to December 2012.The survey questionnaire was self-designed including the nursing knowledge of VAP and the nursing behaviors for preventing of VAP.The Cronbach's α coefficient of questionnaire about understanding the VAP-related knowledge of nurses in ICU was 0.854 6,and the Cronbach's α coefficient of questionnaire about the nursing behaviors for preventing of VAP was 0.847 3.Results One hundred questionnaires were issued and 100 questionnaires were responsive with an effective response rate of 100% in the two kinds of questionnaires. The investigation of ICU nurses' cognition for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) displayed the top 3 which were respectively appropriate endotracheal tube cuff pressure, suction via subglottic and testing the gas pressure every 4-8 hours, and the below 3 which were respectively the use of closed suction system, oral care with cotton ball immersing in physiological saline and suction time. The survey of the nursing behaviors for preventing of VAP displayed the top 3 which were respectively assessment of patients'sedation, helping patients turn button back, paying attention to prevent condensate reflux in the pipe of ventilator and washing your hands before contacting with different patients, and the below 3 which were respectively washing your hands when you contracted the different locations in patients, enteral nutrition in patients with mechanical ventilation and sustaining subglottic secretion drainage in patients with mechanical ventilation. Conclusions The master degree of knowledge of VAP in ICU nurses is deficient, and we should strengthen professional knowledge training for ICU nurses in order to provide better nursing for patients.
