Abstract
Causes of the brittle fracture of the locomotive draw hook are investigated in this paper. The failure occurred when the heavy freight train accelerated after stop at signal between the two stations in winter time (the air temperature of −2 °C). The performed analysis showed that the brittle fracture was caused by the superimposition of several factors. As the main factor heavily coarsened microstructure, exhibiting insufficient toughness can be considered. Based on the analysis, it was found that the relevant standard, prescribing mechanical properties of the locomotive draw hooks, should be critically revised, to ensure safety operation in various conditions.
