Abstract

We report on the threshold, slope efficiency and phase conjugate fidelity of stimulated Brillouin scattering excited by a modeless dye laser that has a continuously variable bandwidth. The liquid n-hexane and the gas C 2F 6 are used as Brillouin media and data is given over a bandwidth range from 130 MHz to 500 GHz. The threshold variation with bandwidth is compared with theory. A reduction in fidelity is observed when the modeless laser is replaced with one that has a longitudinal mode structure.
