Abstract

In recent years, IT projects have proven to have a significant impact which improve the business process and interact with the public. Numerous IT projects have been developed and implemented currently in government and also private sector in order to become more competitive organisation in order to provide better services and achieve competitive advantages. The purpose of this study is to investigate success and failure factors that relates to people who are involved in the IT project implementation in the public sector especially in area of project manager performance, project team member capability, top management support, and user/clients involvement. Besides, all IT officers’ opinion, valuable past experience, issue and constructive idea also has been explored. This research uses both qualitative and quantitative method to obtain the data. In order to conduct the research, nine interviews were conducted with IT officers who are involved in IT project management. The research also collected data from distributing hardcopy questionnaires and through an online paid survey website “Survey Monkey”. The findings showed that various factors are related to the people and issue that had been identified, and finally all the significant factors have been successfully ranked and listed. The analysed data explained that the problem arise in the IT project management process which might be improved in future. The findings of the research show that all IT officers and staff realise about the success and failure factors highlighted therefore a significant action need to be taken by top management to improve the implementation of IT projects where project managers appointed must be fully aware of the factors. As a conclusion, IT projects have been an effective and efficient tool for the government to improve their business process as well as to provide better service to public.
