Abstract

Argon gas enriched to 20% in 38Ar was bombarded with 11 MeV deuterons. Outgoing protons were magnetically analysed and recorded on nuclear emulsions. Five proton groups corresponding to states in 39Ar at 0, 1.262, 2.630, 3.258 and 4.377 MeV excitation were observed, and their angular distributions were measured. Using distorted wave calculations l-values and spectroscopic factors were determined. The ground state was excited by an l = 3 transition and the other four states by l = 1 transitions. Spin and parity assignments and the location of neutron single-particle states are discussed.
