Abstract

Spontaneous imbibition is the main oil production mechanism in naturally fractured reservoirs especially in water invaded zones. In this study and by extending the previous works, the effect of gravity force on the relative contribution of co and counter current imbibition to oil production is investigated. It is assumed that the core is placed vertically while the lower face is in contact with water and the upper face is in contact with oil. In this case, the water imbibes upward in the oil saturated core. After mathematical analysing of the considered scenario, the results show that the gravity effects can be ignored in core scale studies. By a way, in field scale imbibition, the co-current imbibition was decreased and counter-current imbibition was increased by the effect of downward gravity force.
