Abstract

In our efforts in elucidating the structure properties of SSZ-87 and providing input to the determination of its crystallographic structure, we studied it via hydrocarbon adsorption, Al reinsertion and catalytic test reactions, in comparison to other known zeolites. The combined test results categorize SSZ-87 to zeolites intermediate between 10- and 12-ring zeolites, similar to ZSM-12. The recent determination of its crystallographic structure reveals that SSZ-87 is a 10/8-ring zeolite containing large cages which are interconnected via single 10-ring windows which are more flexible than the double 10-rings in other medium pore zeolites. Zeolite SSZ-87 presents a unique example where the flexibility of the unusual single 10-rings attributes to the fact that SSZ-87 behaves more similarly to 12-ring zeolites.
