Abstract

Measurements of velocity oscillations have been made in order to understand the basic refrigeration mechanism in typical pulse tube refrigerators. A hot wire probe, equipped with a fine thermocouple, has been used. The radial profiles of the velocity and the temperature in typical pulse tube refrigerators of the basic, orifice, and double-inlet types, have been measured at the cold end, the middle, and the hot end of the pulse tube, by traversing the probe in the radial direction. On the basis of the profiles, velocity distributions along the pulse tube have also been determined, and the work flux of fluid elements has been estimated. It is found that for the basic pulse tube, the radial distribution of the work flux has a maximum value near the wall, and for the orifice and double-inlet type pulse tubes, the radial profiles have a maximum value at the centerline of the pulse tube.
