Abstract

During service, aircraft are exposed to harsh environmental conditions with moisture being responsible for the majority of bond failures. This paper presents ultrasonic and dielectric NDE techniques that can be used to determine the presence of corrosion and water ingress associated with environmental degradation of adhesive joints. Segregated mechanical tests on the joints indicated that a large decrease in shear strength had occurred which was consistent with marked changes observed in the ultrasonic NDE data and dielectric measurements.
