Abstract

The microscopic structures of different burnished layers in 2024 aluminum alloy were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy. The corrosion resistance of the burnished 2024 aluminum alloy was improved by grain refinement. The decreasing of electron work function improved corrosion resistance of the burnished 2024 aluminum alloy, moreover, less donor and acceptor concentrations in passive film also improved corrosion resistance of the burnished 2024 aluminum alloy. However, the substructures with high density dislocations deteriorated significantly the corrosion resistance of burnished 2024 aluminum alloy. More aluminum oxides improved the corrosion resistance of nanocrystalline 2024 aluminum alloy based on result of XPS.
