Abstract

The application of metallic foam in turbine blade cooling was studied in the present paper. Based on the conjugate heat transfer method, the heat transfer characteristics of turbine cascade with fully or partially metallic foam insert was analyzed. Two cases were considered, the first one referring to the turbine blade full of metallic foam, and the second case corresponding to the blade with additional radial cooling holes. The numerical simulation results indicated that the turbine cooling effect is greatly enhanced with the metallic foam within the turbine blade, but lead to relatively large pressure drop. The metallic foam porosity and solid thermal conductivity had great influence on the turbine cooling effect.
