Abstract

The absorption and fluorescence spectral data for 16 synthetic compounds of the indole, benzazole, and phenanthridium series in various media and in the presence of various amounts of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) are presented. The main features of a generalized model that makes it possible to adequately explain the changes in the spectral properties of such compounds as a function of their chemical structure, the nature of their interaction with the substrate, the properties of the measurement medium, etc., and to design new DNA-specific fluorophores with predetermined properties are provided.
