Abstract

Two types of Zircaloy-4 (alpha-annealed and beta-quenched) were investigated in their different forms. It was found that mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 are affected significantly by welding and hydrogen-charging followed by neutron irradiation. Evaluation of microstructural properties of samples showed that these changes are mainly due to the formation of secondary phases such as hydrides—mostly along grain boundaries, dislocation channeling and their disruptions, and the increase in the <a> type dislocation loops.
