Abstract

An investigation is made of the feasibility of controlling radiation propagating in a planar waveguide by using dynamic diffraction gratings formed by nonequilibrium charge carriers induced by light inside the waveguide as a result of one- and two-photon absorption of optical power. A diffraction efficiency of 45% is reported for the TM0 mode in a GaAs1–xPx waveguide.
