Abstract

Timing jitter due to intra channel cross phase modulation (IXPM) and amplitude jitter due to intra channel four wave mixing (IFWM) in high bit rate transmission system (40 Gbit/s and above) using single mode fiber (SMF) and non zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) are investigated. More than eleven dispersion maps of SMF-IDF, SMF-DCF and NZDSF-DCF are compared. The results show that symmetric dispersion compensation scheme and transmission spans with larger post dispersion compensation performed better, especially the maps starting with SMF are more resilient to timing and amplitude jitter. Dispersion coefficient of fiber and total accumulated dispersion also have significance on the non linear interaction, i-e smaller dispersion coefficient and accumulated dispersion leads to more timing jitter and amplitude jitter 0, which are the main transmission penalties at high bit rates
