Abstract

The effects of sintering additives, LiF and CaCO 3 , on the sintering of alumina-spinels and the possible dissolution and precipitation of alumina in high alumina-spinel were investigated. Results from lattice parameters, phase contents, and X-ray diffraction peaks suggested dissolution and precipitation of alumina occurred in spinel solid solution at various temperatures. This was especially evident in samples incorporated with sintering additives. Results of interfacial analysis and previous calculation (J.L. Huang, S.Y. Sun, Y.C. Ko, J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 80 (12) (1997) 3237–3241) suggested that diffusion mechanism possibly play a role in the dissolution and precipitation of alumina in spinel solid solution.
