Abstract

In transient conditions, electromagnetic forces are produced. Due to these forces, radial and axial displacements in the winding and insulation damage occur. In this paper, short-circuit electromagnetic forces are analysed on the converter transformer winding using finite element analysis. This converter transformer is designed in ANSYS-MAXWELL 3D software. Converter transformer’s winding is divided into sections, and on each section electromagnetic forces are calculated to improve the accuracy of the analysis. These shortcircuit electromagnetic forces contain radial and axial forces determined by the interaction of current density and magnetic field intensity. For the designed converter transformer, electromagnetic forces are calculated for both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal current excitation. From the results, the nature, magnitude and direction of short-circuit electromagnetic forces can be obtained.
