Abstract

Domain structures in multilayers of Co/Pt have been imaged in a scanning transmission electron microscope using the modified differential phase contrast mode of Lorentz microscopy. Observations have been made of films in their ac-demagnetised state and, through in-situ field application, in a series of remanent states. From the former experiments characteristic lengths related to the domain wall energy have been determined whilst the latter give insight into the magnetisation processes within the multilayers. In addition to providing data on the switching fields, direct information is obtained concerning domain nucleation and the development of domain structure approaching saturation.
